India’s Muslim university lifts ban wearing T-shirts, jeans for girls.

The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in India withdrew the earlier ban on T-shirts and jeans for its hostel girl students on Saturday. The bizzare diktats wanted female students to wear salwar kameez with dupatta in hostel as well as outside it.

Dr Ghazala Parveen, the provost of Abdullah Hall in the university hostel campus, had earlier warned girls to bear a fine of Rs 500 if caught violating the dress code. The hostel students were asked to keep just one cell phone to talk to their parents.

The girls were also restricted taking meals in the dining hall, visiting hotels, restaurants and cinemas.

To water down reactions the Public Relations Officer of the university Dr Rahat Abrar today issued a statement saying Ghazala Parveen has been asked to withdraw the decision as this was not an official decision of AMU, but only an advisory to the Abdullah Hall by the in-charge.

Earlier in April this year, Lt Gen (retd) Zameer Uddin Shah, the vice chancellor of AMU, talked about restricting motorcycles from next academic session inside the university campus as it has become a major menace.

Also, an open letter from Shah asked male students to wear sherwanis when they come to see him.
